Protolyne® Microfluidic Chips
Protolyne® Microfluidic Chips
Protolyne® is a development platform for semi-custom microfluidic chips that will be fabricated, based on a customer’s design, quickly and for a reasonable price. Devices are run in large batches that contain many different designs, requiring customers to follow some simple design guidelines.
- Features such as etch depth, reservoir position and chip footprint are set in advance
- Beyond these few parameters, customers are free to include any number of features
Affordable
Design rules allow Micralyne to run Protolyne® microfluidic chips in large fabrication batches, providing the most cost-effective way to do small-run prototyping.
Timely
Protolyne® microfluidic chip runs are scheduled at regular intervals, which allows customers to plan their prototyping cycles. The program will be run on a first come first serve basis. For a list of scheduled production intakes, please contact us.
Compatible
The design rules ensure that the microfluidic chips you create will use a set access hole pattern that is used with each iteration of your chip design. These chips can be used with a biochemical platform.
Chip Footprint
Each Protolyne® microfluidic device is 16 mm x 95 mm x 2.2 mm and made from 2 fused pieces of Schott Borofloat™ glass. Each plate is 1.1 mm thick with the bottom plate containing the etched pattern and the top plate containing the reservoir holes. Please refer to the diagram below:

| Protolyne® Microfluidic Chip Diagram |
| Design Consideration | Limit |
| Etch depth | 20 +/-2 µm |
| Minimum mask line width | 3 µm |
| Minimum mask circle diameter | 5 µm |
| Minimum mask square width | 5 µm |
| Mask undercut (all mask features will grow by this amount in all directions) |
20 +/-2 µm |
| Minimum dist. from edge of chip | 2 mm |
| Etch defects >20mm | Zero |
Chip Etch Profile
A 20 µm isotropic etch of the pattern is performed in the glass. This creates a hemispherical cross section on each side of a feature.
How does it work?
Provide us with a drawing in one of a number of formats, from CAD files (.gds, .dxf) to hand drawings. Together, we will review your design and choose the best run for you. If you have any questions please contact us.
Are you looking for an off-the-shelf chip for capillary electrophoresis?
If yes, please read about Standard Microfluidic Chips.
