Alberta technology capabilities a perfect fit for Canadian PC manufacturer

Calgary, Alberta, July 14, 1998 - Canadian personal computer manufacturer, Seanix Technology (Canada) Inc. found the technical expertise it required to develop a new midrange computer server in Alberta. The capabilities of the Alberta Microelectronic Corporation (AMC) and the Alberta Research Council (ARC) played a major role in securing the project.

"By establishing a strategic relationship with Alberta technology companies, Seanix is able to increase greatly its technical capabilities in a very short time", says Paul Girard, president of Seanix. "This project is the start of a long-term relationship with AMC that will allow Seanix to broaden its engineering capabilities without the risk of internal development."

Alberta Economic Development (AED) led the matching process together with ARC. "AED contacted Seanix in 1996," says Doug Gerrard, director, AED. "With this experience behind us, we hope to be able to attract Alberta's first major computer manufacturing plant."

AED asked ARC to manage the project, based on ARC's expertise in technology development and commercialization. AED proposed AMC for the project since its extensive background in microelectronics, microcontrollers and software design is a perfect fit for the server sub-systems. "Seanixs vision is to partner with AMC to develop server management and reliability products on an on-going basis," says Girard. "We want to develop the relationship and use AMC as a 'centre of excellence' for the development of Seanix products. We intend to rely on AMC to develop key components of our server product line."

AMC's development experience allowed the server project to proceed rapidly. The companys capabilities complement Seanixs expertise in PC motherboard and video card engineering. The purpose of the project was to design and lay the foundation for implementation of the redundant power share back plane (RPSB) and the hot swap SCSI (small computer systems interface) back plane (HSSB) products.

Seanix Technology (Canada) Inc. designs, manufactures, customizes and services computer products and systems. Founded in 1986, Seanix promotes leading-edge technology solutions. With offices across Canada and Taiwan, the company has expanded globally to continue servicing its customers better. Investing heavily in research and development, Seanix is proud of its Canadian-made products and its commitment to the Canadian economy. The Alberta Microelectronic Corporation (AMC), a University of Alberta spin-off founded in 1982, designs and manufactures critical components for computer and industrial equipment manufacturers; and miniaturized instruments for biotechnology and telecommunications. With over 65 employees, AMC has customers in 17 countries worldwide and derives more than half of its revenues from exports.

Alberta Economic Development (AED) focuses on the governments prosperity core business of strengthening economic growth, supporting job creation by the private sector, and helping Albertans build a future for themselves and their children. Albertas competitive business environment, world class infrastructure and skilled workforce have attracted new industry and allowed business to flourish.

The Alberta Research Council (ARC) works with customers and partners to bring technology developments into commercial use for the benefit of all Albertans. ARC provides a full spectrum of R&D and advisory services that effectively bridge the gap between basic research and market development. ARC is widely recognized for its research capability in seven key market sectors: agriculture, biotechnology, energy, environment, forestry, information technology, and manufacturing.
