EDMONTON, AB –June 11, 2019 Micralyne is proud to support students attending the Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science, & Technology Summer Research Program (WISEST SRP) at the University of Alberta. WISEST focuses on creating effective programs to empower women (and other underrepresented groups) to pursue, impact, and succeed in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.

Industry supporters, like Micralyne, help students get hands-on experience in the industry. According to Fervone Goings, WISEST Team Lead, “These supports help remove barriers to the program, so students don’t have to worry about housing costs or meals, for example. In addition to gaining STEM knowledge, the program encourages personal growth and can be life-changing.”

The WISEST SRP encourages participants to explore a future in science, engineering, and technology fields. Micralyne is helping to support five students attend the program this summer. In addition to sponsorship, Micralyne is offering a facility tour to the SRP students so they can learn more about Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) manufacturing and design.

WISEST Students prepared to tour Micralyne’s facilities in 2018.

For over 35 years, SRP has been giving students the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in university, and in the STEM fields. This year there were 40 available placements for grade 11 students. The program depends on its industry sponsors. With more sponsorships, like Micralyne’s, they will be able to increase the number of available placements in this program next year.

With the SRP program, students get to work with top researchers and innovators, and become a part of the research team within the lab. Most of the research opportunities available are in laboratories located at the University of Alberta campus, but some involve fieldwork.
